Alternatives to AYY's mailing list service

What kind of list?

Here are some examples of lists that were previously hosted on list.ayy.fi:

  • Board list: A list for the board members to receive notifications and communications
  • Member list: Mailing list for contacting all members
  • Newcomers list: Mailing list for new students
  • Alumni list: Mailing list for storing contact information of alumni

In general you can divide the lists into two types: ones for receiving email on behalf of a group (for example, the board) and ones for sending news and information to a larger audience. With mailing lists you could do both, but generally many modern email services focus on one or the other.

Receiving email

Google Groups

Perhaps the simplest alternative to a mailing list is using Google Groups. Anyone with a Google account can create a @googlegroups.com mailing list and invite others to join.

If your association is using Google Workspace (formerly G Suite), you can create a group that is managed by your association's Google Workspace account. This allows you to create an email group with your association's domain.

Louhi web hosting mailing lists

If your association is using Louhi web hosting, you can create mailing lists and set up email forwarding through their service.

Google Workspace / Microsoft 365

For more advanced features, you can use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 to manage your association's emails.

Both Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 have free plans for non-profits, although you may have to go through some verification bureucracy to get the free plan.

Sending bulk emails

Here are some examples of services for sending bulk mails or newsletters to your associations members.

Up to 100 subsribers for free. Soft limit of one email per subsriber per day.

Free plan includes up to 500 contacts and 1000 sends per month, with a daily limit of 500 sends.

Free plan includes up to 1500 contacts, 6000 emails per month with 200 emails per day maximum.

Other solutions

Cloudflare Email Routing

If your association is using Cloudflare to manage its domain, you can set up Cloudflare Email Routing to forward emails to a specific address. For example you can set up a rule to forward all emails sent to board@association.fi to your Google Group. Or you can set up rules for specific roles like chairman@board.fi to forward to the chairman's personal email.

Alternatives to email

Telegram channels

Instead of using emails, your association can create a Telegram channel to send announcements and news to your members.
